1851 on the Road: Thriving Buffalo Wings & Rings Multi-Unit Franchisee Explains Why Working with the Right People Leads to Success
1851 Franchise publisher Nick Powills sat down with David Bourlier at Buffalo Wings & Rings’ annual convention to learn more about his journey from one to three units.

For Buffalo Wings & Rings, growing and experiencing success on a national—or even global—level isn’t its only goal. The brand is equally committed to helping its franchisees thrive in their local communities. That’s why every year, when members of the Buffalo Wings & Rings franchise system gather for the brand’s annual conference, it shines a spotlight on the work that its local owners are doing on a day to day basis to ensure that it’s moving in the right direction.

One franchisee who’s consistently growing alongside the Buffalo Wings & Rings brand is David Bourlier. The multi-unit franchisee has been with the brand for ten years, and together with his family, has built his portion of the franchise system from the ground up. It was Bourlier’s dad, Brian, who first introduced him to the brand by signing on as a franchisee. But after recognizing the brand’s growth potential, Bourlier and his two brothers—Darrell and Derrick—made the business a family affair and got involved on the management and franchisee level.

To learn more about how Bourlier and his family went from one restaurant to a second, with a third opening within the month, 1851 Franchise publisher Nick Powills sat down with him during this year’s Buffalo Wings & Rings conference, which was given the theme “Wings of Fortune.” During their conversation, Bourlier told Powills that he credits his success to the strong team around him, from the brand’s corporate staff members to those working in his restaurants. In fact, he says that the people working in a restaurant have the potential to make or break a location’s success.

Bourlier said, “It’s very long hours unless you’re not the operating partner. If you’re just the financial part of it, then it’s not so bad. But if you’re going to be the operating partner—long hours in the beginning until you can find people. People is the biggest thing. Finding people you can trust and nurture; have them take over what you do, and then that’s why you open up more stores is because they need something more to do.”

That need for top quality people—and the challenging search to find them—are not things that Bourlier expected when he first broke into the restaurant segment of the franchising industry. While it required a lot of hard work and a large time investment to learn the ins and outs of the restaurant franchise industry, he has still been able to expand his reach in Florida as an entrepreneur by opening up an additional location with the help and support of the Buffalo Wings & Rings team. And now, Bourlier is preparing for the launch of his third restaurant before the end of 2017.

“We’re on our third store now. It’s been eight years, but we’re on our third store and we started from nothing. So, [success] can happen.”
